NGSL Graded Story Creator

The NGSL Graded Story Creator (Browne, 2025) is a free AI tool developed as part of the New General Service List (NGSL) Project. It generates original reading texts aligned to one of seven NGSL levels, each corresponding to a defined frequency band within the NGSL framework.

These seven levels reflect progressively wider vocabulary coverage, allowing teachers to control lexical input in a systematic and measurable way.

Unlike general AI systems, this tool is designed around the NGSL frequency structure. When verified using the NGSL Profiler, texts are far more likely to reach the 95–98% coverage range associated with effective reading comprehension.

How to Use the Tool

1. Select one of the seven NGSL levels (based on the frequency band you wish to target).

2. Enter your topic and desired word length.

3. Generate the story.

4. Check lexical coverage using the NGSL Profiler.

For best results, use the NGSL Placement Test first to determine your students’ vocabulary level, then generate texts that match their band.
