Medical Oral English List (MOEL)
The Medical Oral English List (MOEL) is a specialized word list designed to facilitate effective communication between medical professionals and patients in English. Developed specifically for medical and nursing students in Japan, the NGSL-compatible version of the list has been made publicly available. The list was compiled using Level 7 of the NGSL Profiler (Browne, 2024) to distinguish general English words from specialized medical vocabulary commonly used in medical communication. Drawing upon a range of medical English course books, the compilers identified the most frequent words and phrases related to conditions, illnesses, and treatments that are likely to occur in interactions between medical practitioners and patients. The first version of MOEL currently includes over 650 words and phrases, serving as a valuable resource for educators and learners aiming to enhance communication in professional medical contexts beyond everyday conversation.
This Medical Oral English List consists of words and phrases gathered from these sources and others.
