Medical Oral English List (MOEL)
The Medical Oral English List (MOEL) is a specialized word list created to facilitate effective communication between medical professionals and patients in English.
Developed for medical and nursing students in Japan, we are pleased to share our NGSL-compatible version of the list with the general public. This list was created using the Level 7 of the NGSL Profiler (Browne, 2024) to differentiate the general English words from the specialized medical vocabulary used for medical communication.
Using a number of medical English course books, we extracted the most common words and phrases associated with conditions, illnesses and treatments that will most likely be communicated between medical practitioners and patients. As such the first version of MOEL currently contains over 650 words and phrases that educators and learners can use as a resource to help communicate in professional settings beyond day to day interactions.
